New Jersey American Water’s Short Hills system draws on 25 wells, four surface intakes on Canoe Brook and the Passaic River, and water purchased from more than a dozen other utilities. Blending keeps supply reliable, but it also means chlorine level, taste and hardness at your tap can change from month to month as the mix shifts.
The state’s source water assessment rates the system’s surface intakes as highly susceptible to pathogens, which is why disinfection is heavy and chlorine taste is a common complaint. Hardness from the well and river portions of the blend leaves scale on fixtures and shortens the life of water heaters and dishwashers.
