Veolia’s Franklin Lakes system serves roughly 5,900 residents with a blend of Brunswick aquifer wells, glacial sand-and-gravel wells and Wanaque Reservoir water. Everyone else in the borough is on a private well, which is why Franklin Lakes publishes its own well-testing guidance and New Jersey recommends that well owners test with a certified lab every year and at every home sale under the Private Well Testing Act.
Private wells in northern Bergen County commonly show hardness, iron and manganese staining, sulfur odor and low pH that corrodes copper. PFAS can also reach groundwater; Veolia now runs 12 PFAS treatment systems across New Jersey with 14 more in design or construction, but a private well has no utility treating it for you.
